With an anime adaptation coming this fall, I decided to give Pass the Monster Meat a try and read through the first 11 volumes of the manga. Overall, I found the story to be a bit slow and, at times, directionless. It doesn’t seem to be building toward much, which made it feel a little dull in places. So, if you’re looking for a strong plot or deep narrative, this might not be the series for you.
That said, if you’re into food and don’t mind a laid-back, plot-light story, you might actually enjoy it. As someone who enjoys cooking, I loved how the food was presented. The meals look genuinely delicious — I’d love to try making some of them myself. Honestly, it just made me hungry!
There are also a few sweet and wholesome moments between the characters, which add some warmth to the otherwise meandering story. The one part of the upcoming anime I’m actually excited about is seeing all the food animated. Aside from that, I’ll probably be skipping the show unless it tightens up its storytelling.
Across the series, the only character that really annoyed me was Ducase, a knight introduced in volume 11. I’m hoping he improves later, but I doubt he’ll make it into the anime adaptation anyway.
I recommend Pass the Monster Meat if you’re a fan of food manga, cooking, or just want something cozy and relaxing without much drama. Just don’t expect a gripping plot — come for the food, stay if you’re full.
